Redbox Mobile review: ASO and Apple Search Ads under one roof. Avoid the incentive problem.

Redbox Mobile sells App Store Optimization next to Apple Search Ads management, and it is well regarded for the second. That combination is pitched as a strength. Before you sign, understand what it does to the advice you get: when the same agency earns from your ad spend and from your organic work, one of those has a much bigger upside for them.

Thinking about hiring Redbox Mobile? Avoid. Let me explain the incentive problem.

Gabriel Machuret · September 2026

Redbox Mobile has been around since 2013, is based in the UK with a presence in London and New York, and has built a solid reputation, particularly around Apple Search Ads. If you are choosing an ASA agency, they are on any sensible shortlist. This page is about something narrower: hiring them for ASO. And the reason I would think hard about that has nothing to do with competence. It has to do with incentives.

Here is the structure. An agency that manages your Apple Search Ads typically earns a fee tied to spend, or a retainer that scales with the size of the account. An agency doing your ASO earns a flat retainer for work whose whole purpose is to reduce your dependence on paid installs. Put those two services in the same building and you have created a company that is rewarded more when your paid budget grows than when your organic results improve. I am not accusing anyone of anything. I am pointing out which way the ground slopes.

You see the slope in the advice. Organic and paid ‘work together’, you will be told, which is true. Paid keywords ‘inform’ organic strategy, also true. The Search Ads campaign is ‘protecting your brand terms’, which is sometimes true and always billable. Month after month, the paid side of the report is where the movement is, because paid moves fast and organic moves slowly, and the retainer follows the movement. The ASO work quietly becomes the supporting act.

Now think about what ASO actually is. A properly rewritten title, subtitle and keyword field. One clear screenshot hypothesis tested against another. Patience while the stores respond, then the next change. The whole point is that after it is done, you pay less to acquire each user. That outcome is good for you and, at an agency that also bills on ad spend, mildly bad for them. Structure matters more than intentions.

Compare that with hiring one consultant who does not manage media. I have no ad budget to grow. My only incentive is that the listing works, because that is what earns the next referral. The scope is fixed: rewrite, test, ship, hand over. I will set up your Search Ads account and show your team how to run it, and then I will get out of the way. The fee is a fraction of a year’s retainer, and nothing on the invoice depends on how much you spend with Apple.

To be fair to Redbox: if what you actually want is a managed Apple Search Ads programme with organic support alongside it, they are a legitimate, experienced option. If what you want is your organic listing fixed by someone with no stake in your ad spend, the structure matters. Send me their proposal and I will show you which lines are ASO, which are ASA, and what the ASO costs on its own.

04Red flags in a paid-plus-organic proposal

If you see three, send it to me
  1. ASO fee bundled with a percentage-of-spend media fee
  2. Brand-term bidding recommended before organic brand ranking has been checked
  3. ‘Paid keyword data informs organic’ used to justify a spend increase
  4. Organic deliverables described as ‘ongoing optimisation’ with no dated changes
  5. A minimum term on the media account that outlasts the ASO scope
  6. Reports where the paid section is three times the length of the organic one

05What ‘paid and organic together’ means in practice

Hover a row to unredact

Integrated strategy

The paid team and the organic team share a deck. The paid side moves daily and fills the report. The organic side moves monthly and gets a slide. Attention follows movement, and the retainer follows attention.

Translation: Paid eats the meeting

Brand protection

Bidding on your own brand terms is presented as defensive. It is also spend, and spend is billable. Ask what happens to organic brand installs when you stop.

Translation: Defence is a line item

Apple partner

A real credential for running Search Ads. It says nothing about who rewrites your subtitle, and it aligns the agency with growing spend on Apple’s platform.

Translation: Partner of whom?

06Should you avoid Redbox Mobile?

Honest answer: depends who you are

Avoid if

You want your organic listing fixed by someone with no stake in your ad spendYour ASO budget is under $40k a yearYou do not want a managed media programme, now or laterYou want your team to run Search Ads themselves

Hire them if

I will separate the ASO from the ASA, tell you what the organic work would take on its own, and quote it as a fixed fee. If a managed paid programme is what you actually need, I will say so.

One reply from Gabriel. Same scope, fixed fee, or an honest ‘sign with them’.

08 — Objections

Isn’t it better to have paid and organic in one place?+

It is convenient. It also puts two services with different incentives inside one P&L, and the one tied to spend has more upside for the agency. Convenience has a price; decide if it is worth it.

Do I need Apple Search Ads at all?+

Often yes, at some level. I will set it up and teach your team to run it. What you do not need is a permanent management fee tied to how much you spend.

Can one consultant match an Apple partner agency?+

On media buying at scale, no, and I do not try. On rewriting your listing and testing your creative, one experienced person is exactly what the job needs.

Is this review biased?+

Yes. I compete for ASO work. That is why the argument is about incentive structure, not competence, and why I have said plainly that they are a good choice for managed Search Ads.
