Your ASO learning objective

Write a scoped creative brief that names the audience, the misunderstanding to resolve and the evidence you need.

  1. Step 1Choose one audience and locale
  2. Step 2Identify one misunderstanding
  3. Step 3Choose a released capability as proof
The lesson workflow

Start with the decision the listing must support

A screenshot sequence is a compact product argument. Before choosing a background or device frame, decide what a visitor should understand. Separate the business goal, such as more qualified installs, from the communication job, such as recognizing that the app is a personal hiking journal rather than a navigation product. A design can look polished while communicating the wrong job.

Choose one store, one locale and one audience for this project. Record whether the visitor is likely arriving from a broad search, a specific campaign or another source. If you do not know the source mix, record that as a research gap. Do not quietly turn an assumption about traffic into a design requirement.

Define what a useful result would look like

Write a brief with four statements: who is evaluating the app, what they are trying to do, what the current listing makes unclear, and which released capability supports the proposed promise. Then name the next decision. You might be deciding which message deserves a comprehension review, rather than claiming that a new design will increase conversion.

Keep the brief small enough to guide trade-offs. If one stakeholder requests route planning, another asks for social sharing and a third wants the journal history, evaluate each request against the chosen audience and communication job. Features outside this brief can remain in the backlog. A narrower brief makes a negative result easier to learn from.

Establish a baseline without inventing one

Save the current listing and date. If you have console data, record the precise metric, period, locale and acquisition source. If you have only public material, start with a structured comprehension review and label it accordingly. An attractive before-and-after image does not establish a download improvement.

Worked example: Trail Notes

This fictional hiking-journal app is the teaching project. Treat the example as a reasoning exercise you can adapt to your own evidence.

  1. Original draftMake Trail Notes screenshots more premium and increase downloads.
  2. Revised proposalFor English-speaking weekend hikers, make the personal-journal purpose clear in the opening screenshot using a saved walk with photos and notes.
  3. Why it changesThe revised brief defines a visitor, a communication task and visible proof. It does not promise an unmeasured uplift or imply that the fictional app offers navigation.
From a weak draft to a defensible proposal

Your ASO assignment

  1. Create a project in the Storyboard Builder. Enter your audience and one promise the current product can demonstrate.
  2. Add a first screenshot card. Write the communication objective in its visual-direction field and identify the screen that could prove it.
  3. In the rationale, record your baseline source, date and two evidence gaps. Use the fictional example if you do not have an app.

Your handover and assessment criteria

Your work is ready for review when each deliverable below can be understood without a verbal explanation. Include the source or product reference, the decision owner and any unresolved evidence gap. If a reviewer cannot verify a claim, record the missing evidence before treating the proposal as approved.

  1. Deliverable 1Scoped audience and communication objective
  2. Deliverable 2Current listing reference and evidence gaps
  3. Deliverable 3Named reviewer and next decision
Three deliverables to include in your handover

Check your understanding

The team wants the first screenshot to promise offline navigation, but only offline journal reading exists. What belongs in the brief?

Read the interpretation

Use the supported journal-reading capability and describe it precisely. Keep navigation out of the listing brief unless it is a released, verified product capability. Ask product owners to resolve uncertainty before creative production.
