Your ASO learning objective

Adapt approved research into clear Google Play listing text instead of copying an App Store keyword-field format.

  1. Step 1Select Google Play field roles
  2. Step 2Write supported benefits naturally
  3. Step 3Recheck assignments and store-specific constraints
The lesson workflow

Write for the store’s actual fields

Google Play uses an app name, short description and full description rather than the App Store keyword-field workflow. In the Workbench, switching the project store changes the visible draft fields and flags approved assignments that belong to the other store. Preserve your earlier project backup before adapting a new store proposal.

Google’s setup documentation specifies 30 characters for the app name, 80 for the short description and 4,000 for the full description. These limits do not imply that longer copy is always stronger. Lead with the product job, explain supported capabilities and make the next level of detail easy to scan.

Integrate research into useful sentences

Use customer language where it accurately describes the product. “Keep a hiking journal with photos and notes from each walk” communicates a supported job. A block of loosely related phrases such as “hiking app trail maps diary route planner” makes the promise harder to understand and mixes incompatible expectations.

Google’s metadata policy warns against repetitive or unrelated keywords. Review the description as product communication: what can the user do, what evidence or screen supports that statement, and what conditions matter? Avoid unsupported ranking claims, promotional assertions or competitor references introduced simply to capture searches.

Review the difference from the App Store proposal

The same research can inform both stores, but field assignments and wording need a fresh review. Move a candidate from an iOS-only field to a suitable Play field, explain the placement and inspect the resulting text. Keep the original import and reasons intact. When transferring to Listing Studio, the destination store must match so that one store’s structure does not overwrite another’s proposal.

Worked example: Trail Notes

This fictional hiking-journal app and its review samples are the teaching project. Treat the example as a reasoning exercise you can adapt to your own evidence.

  1. Original draftA comma-separated iOS keyword list pasted at the end of a Play description.
  2. Revised proposalA short description explaining the hiking journal, followed by concise paragraphs about saving photos, writing notes and revisiting walks.
  3. Why it changesThe revised copy serves the reader and uses relevant language naturally. It does not treat repetition as a substitute for product relevance.
From a weak draft to a defensible proposal

Your ASO assignment

  1. Export your current research project, switch to Google Play and review which candidate assignments are now flagged.
  2. Write a name, short description and full description in draft B. Use headings or short paragraphs to explain the supported workflow.
  3. Ask another reader to describe the app after reading only the name and short description. Record mismatched expectations and revise the wording.

Work on your app project

Your handover and assessment criteria

Your work is ready for review when each deliverable below can be understood without a verbal explanation. Include the source or product reference, the decision owner and any unresolved evidence gap. If a reviewer cannot verify a claim, record the missing evidence before treating the proposal as approved.

  1. Deliverable 1Google Play metadata proposal
  2. Deliverable 2Revised candidate assignments and reasons
  3. Deliverable 3Policy, readability and field-length review notes
Three deliverables to include in your handover

Check your understanding

Should you repeat an approved phrase in every paragraph to maximize keyword coverage?

Read the interpretation

No. Use it where it helps describe the product. Repetition that reduces clarity or introduces unrelated keywords conflicts with a useful listing and Google’s metadata guidance.

Record your progress

Mark this lesson complete after checking your assignment against the handover criteria. Progress stays in this browser, separately from your tool project.
