ASO agencies in South Africa · September 2026

ASO agency South Africa: brand agencies with an ASO line and a storefront that behaves like two countries.

South Africa has the most mature advertising industry on the continent: global network offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, strong performance agencies, serious in-house teams at the banks and retailers. It has almost no one practising App Store Optimisation as a discipline. What ranks for ‘ASO agency South Africa’ is digital agencies with a page, and the storefront they are optimising for is really two markets in one. Here is what that means.

Thinking about a South African ASO agency? Let me explain what the ad market sells.

Gabriel Machuret · September 2026

South Africa is where global advertising networks run Africa from, and the local agency scene reflects that: creative-led, brand-led, media-led, with a strong performance layer on top. The banks, retailers and telcos that dominate the app charts have serious in-house growth teams. What the market does not have is anybody selling App Store Optimisation as a core discipline, so the agencies that appear when you search are digital and performance shops in Cape Town and Johannesburg that added ASO to the services page when clients asked.

Brand-agency instincts applied to a store listing produce a specific result. The screenshots are beautiful, on-brand and say nothing that would make a stranger tap. The description is a brand manifesto. The keyword field, if anyone has touched it, is a list of brand terms and category names. The monthly report is about impressions and engagement. Everything is polished and none of it is a decision about what a person searching your category needs to see first. Brand agencies are built to make a known brand look right. ASO is built to make an unknown app get chosen.

The second South African pattern is the two-storefront problem. The country’s app market is really two markets: an affluent, iPhone-heavy, English-first segment that behaves like Europe, and a much larger budget-Android segment where data cost, app size and trust behave the way they do in the rest of Africa. A listing optimised for the first segment, which is what a Cape Town agency’s instincts produce, under-serves the second, which is where the growth is. Neither the keyword field nor the first screenshot can serve both without a deliberate decision about which comes first.

The third pattern is the media default. South African performance agencies are good, and they are built on spend. ASO at a performance shop is the door to the managed-media relationship, competently scoped and lightly staffed, and when organic goes quiet the spend conversation starts.

The fourth is the network office. Global agencies’ Johannesburg offices sell ASO as a line in an Africa media plan, staffed from a roster elsewhere, with a local account manager and a Pan-African pitch. For a South African app with a South African listing, that is a continent’s overhead for one page.

Against that: one consultant who treats South Africa as two storefronts and a category read. A teardown against your actual South African competitors, including the banks. A deliberate decision about which segment the first screenshot serves, and why. A keyword architecture built from how South Africans search in English and, where it matters, in other languages. One test. A handover with dates. The fee is fixed and comparable to a few months of a Joburg retainer.

To be fair to South Africa: if you need brand, creative and paid media run by people who understand the market, the local agencies are genuinely strong and the network offices are competent. If you need your listing to make a stranger tap, brand instincts are the wrong instincts. Send me the listing and I will show you what a two-storefront teardown looks like.

01 — What you will actually find when you search

What the first page of results actually contains
01

The brand and digital agency

Cape Town and Joburg shops built for known brands. Beautiful screenshots that say nothing to a stranger.

02

The performance agency

Paid media is the business. ASO is the door to the managed-spend relationship.

03

The global network’s Africa office

A continent’s overhead on the invoice for one listing.

04

The software house

Built your app, would like to build the next release.

05

The SEO agency

Google instincts applied to a store with no backlinks.

06

The bank or retailer’s in-house team

Where the country’s real store expertise sits.

South African fees are moderate and the creative and media work behind them is genuinely good. The store listing is a different discipline, and the two-segment market makes the default instincts wrong for the larger half.

03 — Six questions to ask any South African ASO agency

Take these to the first call
  1. Which segment does our first screenshot serve, the iPhone market or budget Android, and why that one first?
  2. What does the first screenshot say to a stranger who has never heard of our brand?
  3. Which South African apps have you ranked for a competitive term with organic changes only?
  4. How does the plan address app size and data cost for the Android segment?
  5. Is ASO your core business or a line next to brand and media?
  6. When the contract ends, what does our team run on its own?

04 — Should you hire an ASO agency in South Africa?

Honest answer: depends who you are

Avoid if

The agency is a brand shop with an ASO pageThe screenshots are on-brand and say nothing to a strangerThe plan does not distinguish the two segmentsYou would be buying organic inside a media retainer

Hire locally if

You need brand, creative and paid media run by people who understand South AfricaYou are a known brand and the listing needs to look right more than it needs to win a strangerOrganic is genuinely secondary to your media engine

Objections

South Africa has excellent agencies. Why not ASO?+

They are excellent at brand and media. Brand instincts make a known name look right; ASO makes an unknown app get chosen. Different job.

Why two segments?+

An iPhone-heavy affluent segment behaves like Europe; a much larger budget-Android segment behaves like the rest of Africa on data cost, size and trust. One listing cannot serve both without a decision.

Can you handle South African languages?+

I do the category read and structure with native input where search behaviour requires it. Most search is in English with local terms; the keyword field has to reflect that.

Should we use a network agency’s Africa office?+

For a Pan-African media plan, perhaps. For a South African listing, it is a continent’s overhead for one page.
