Your ASO learning objective
Prepare one localized version with a reviewable message, layout and product-language brief.
- Step 1Choose one supported market
- Step 2Review meaning and terminology
- Step 3Approve the actual localized image
Choose a pilot locale for a reason
Start with a market the product can serve and where you have a reason to investigate demand. Relevant evidence might include existing users, support readiness, acquisition plans or store performance. Record which evidence you actually have. A large population alone does not tell you whether this app, offer and support experience are suitable.
Use A for the source-language proposal and B for a single target locale during this exercise. Set the locale labels clearly. This two-version workspace is a pilot comparison, not a full translation-management system. Export each completed project before moving to another market so approved work is not overwritten.
Adapt the meaning and the product context
Give the reviewer the audience, intended benefit, product proof and terminology to preserve. Ask for natural wording that communicates the same supported promise. Literal translation may preserve words while changing tone or becoming awkward. Do not ask a reviewer to fix a sentence without explaining what the visitor should understand.
Inspect the in-app language shown in the screenshot as well as the overlaid headline. Review dates, units and examples where relevant. If the app itself does not support the target language, resolve how the listing should communicate that reality before publication. A localized headline should not create a false expectation about the product experience.
Recheck layout after language review
Upload the localized artwork and inspect it at phone size. Longer text may need a different line break or a more concise message, rather than a smaller font. For right-to-left languages, verify direction and composition with a qualified reviewer; a locale label alone does not transform the preview layout. Record who approved meaning and who checked the final visual file.
Worked example: Trail Notes
This fictional hiking-journal app is the teaching project. Treat the example as a reasoning exercise you can adapt to your own evidence.
- Original draftThe source headline is translated literally, squeezed into the same box and approved without reviewing the in-app English labels.
- Revised proposalA native reviewer checks the intended journal benefit, agrees natural wording, and reviews the finished image with its actual interface language.
- Why it changesThe second process checks meaning, expectation and visual execution. The metadata comparison can surface differences but cannot certify translation quality.
Your ASO assignment
- Copy your source proposal to B and label the target locale. Record why this market is worth a pilot.
- Write a translator brief in the version notes: audience, promise, terminology, product-language constraints and reviewer.
- Add localized drafts or document what is missing, then export a separate backup for this locale.
Your handover and assessment criteria
Your work is ready for review when each deliverable below can be understood without a verbal explanation. Include the source or product reference, the decision owner and any unresolved evidence gap. If a reviewer cannot verify a claim, record the missing evidence before treating the proposal as approved.
- Deliverable 1Source and localized proposal with locale labels
- Deliverable 2Terminology and translation review notes
- Deliverable 3Visual approval and unresolved product-language gaps
Check your understanding
The translated headline fits only after reducing its size substantially. What should happen next?
Read the interpretation
Revisit wording and composition with the language reviewer and designer. Preserve readable communication rather than forcing a literal sentence into the source layout. Review the final image at phone size before approval.
Record your progress
