Your ASO learning objective

Write an experiment brief with an isolated treatment, defined metric and a defensible interpretation plan.

  1. Step 1Define one treatment and audience
  2. Step 2Specify metric and interpretation rules
  3. Step 3Record outcome, uncertainty and next action
The lesson workflow

Translate a creative idea into a hypothesis

A useful hypothesis names the change, the expected response and the reason. ‘The new design wins’ is a preference. ‘A saved-journal opening makes the app's purpose clearer to weekend hikers than a scenic opening’ is a communication hypothesis you can investigate. A comprehension exercise can inform that hypothesis before a store experiment measures acquisition behavior.

Specify the control and treatment precisely. Preserve later screenshots and relevant metadata when they are not part of the question. Define the eligible audience, locale and acquisition context. Use the relevant console's current experiment setup and result guidance; a static side-by-side preview is not an experiment and does not route real visitors.

Choose the interpretation before reading results

Define the primary metric and its denominator before starting. Record the intended review process, concurrent releases and campaigns, and conditions that would make the comparison unreliable. Include an inconclusive outcome. There is no fixed duration that makes every experiment sufficiently informative, because traffic and the size of the effect matter.

For an arithmetic teaching example, 200 installs from 1,000 comparable visitors is 20%, while 220 from 1,000 is 22%. The difference is two percentage points, or 10% relative to the control rate. Those descriptive numbers alone do not establish a reliable effect. Use the platform's uncertainty and decision guidance rather than declaring a winner from the larger observed percentage.

Connect the result to a next action

State what you would do after supportive, contradictory or inconclusive evidence. A result that does not support the treatment may point to the wrong message, weak proof or a different audience response. Keep the learning narrower than the experiment supports. Archive the assets, setup and interpretation so later teams can understand the decision rather than repeating the same unsupported assumption.

Worked example: Trail Notes

This fictional hiking-journal app is the teaching project. Treat the example as a reasoning exercise you can adapt to your own evidence.

  1. Original draftRun the new screenshots for a week. Keep them if downloads rise.
  2. Revised proposalCompare an isolated opening treatment in the native store experiment, record eligible traffic and the console's conversion definition, then review its result guidance with concurrent changes documented.
  3. Why it changesThe revised plan separates a controlled comparison from a before-and-after trend. A weekly download increase can have many causes outside screenshot design.
From a weak draft to a defensible proposal

Your ASO assignment

  1. Use the shared test-plan field to write the hypothesis, control, treatment, metric definition, owner and review conditions.
  2. List what remains unchanged and identify concurrent releases or campaigns that need coordination.
  3. Write the action for supportive, contradictory and inconclusive results. Use the existing experiment planner if you need a longer standalone brief.

Work on your app project

Your handover and assessment criteria

Your work is ready for review when each deliverable below can be understood without a verbal explanation. Include the source or product reference, the decision owner and any unresolved evidence gap. If a reviewer cannot verify a claim, record the missing evidence before treating the proposal as approved.

  1. Deliverable 1Versioned control and treatment assets
  2. Deliverable 2Metric, audience and experiment setup brief
  3. Deliverable 3Interpretation rules, owner and decision log
Three deliverables to include in your handover

Check your understanding

The treatment converts at 22% versus 20% for the control. Can the brief call it a proven 10% improvement?

Read the interpretation

The observed relative difference is 10%, but reliability and interpretation require sample context, the experiment design and uncertainty assessment. Report the descriptive result accurately and use the native platform's evidence before making a stronger claim.

Record your progress

Mark this lesson complete after checking your assignment against the handover criteria. Progress stays in this browser, separately from your tool project.
