ASO agency review · September 2026

Gummicube review: the tool is the pitch. Avoid paying rent on it.

Gummicube calls itself the first App Store Optimization company in the world, and it has the proprietary data platform to prove it takes the discipline seriously. The question for you is simpler: do you need a technology company’s monthly fee to get your title, keywords and screenshots fixed? Usually not.

Thinking about hiring Gummicube? Avoid. Here is the honest version.

Gabriel Machuret · September 2026

If you have taken a sales call with Gummicube, you have seen the demo. Their own keyword data, their own search-volume model, a platform called DATACUBE that they will tell you is better than the third-party tools everyone else rents. It is a good demo. It is also the reason I would think twice before signing, and I want to walk you through why.

When an agency owns a technology platform, the platform becomes the product. The retainer you pay is not just for the person rewriting your listing. It is for the engineers maintaining the data pipeline, the salespeople demoing it to the next client, and the overhead of being a software company in Silicon Valley. None of that is dishonest. It is simply expensive, and the expense lands on your invoice whether or not it changes the number of installs your app gets next month.

Here is the part the demo skips. Keyword data, however proprietary, is the cheap part of ASO. Any competent consultant with two subscriptions and an afternoon can tell you which terms have volume and which you can realistically rank for. The expensive part is judgment: deciding which three terms belong in your title, which claim your first screenshot should make, and what to cut. That judgment lives in one experienced person’s head, and it does not scale across an account team, no matter how good the dashboard behind them is.

Think about what happens after the sale. Your account gets a manager, an ASO strategist and a designer. They are competent. They also have a roster, and your app is one line on it. Each month you receive a report generated from the platform, full of ranking movements and share-of-voice charts. It is genuinely impressive to look at. Read it a second time and ask: which change shipped this month, and what did that change do to installs? Data describing your store is not the same as work done on your store.

Compare that with hiring one consultant. I do not own a data platform, and that is a feature. I spend the budget on the thing that moves installs: rewriting the metadata properly, designing the screenshot test, shipping it, and waiting for the stores to respond. Fixed scope, fixed fee. When we finish, you own the keyword map and the test log, and your own team can run the next round with a tool that costs less per year than one month of an agency retainer.

To be fair to Gummicube: if you run a large portfolio and want a single vendor that combines ASO with Apple Search Ads and creative production, they are a credible option with more than a decade behind them. If you are one app with one listing that needs fixing, you are paying to keep a data platform running. Send me their proposal and I will show you which lines are work and which are rent.

02What the platform demo says vs what lands in your store

Proprietary data

Their keyword volumes are modelled, like everyone’s. Better modelling is a real edge for the agency’s reports. It is a marginal edge for your listing, which still needs one person to make a decision.

Translation: Data is not a deliverable

Full-service ASO

Metadata, creative, paid search and localization under one contract. Each is a separate team, and each team needs to be coordinated by someone whose salary you fund.

Translation: You pay for coordination

Since 2009

Longevity is a genuine signal that they know the stores. It is also fifteen years of process, templates and playbooks that get applied to you the same way they were applied to the last client.

04Red flags to look for in a Gummicube proposal

If you see three, send it to me
01

More slides about the platform than about your listing

02

A monthly ‘keyword monitoring’ line with no change attached to it

03

Localization into fifteen languages before your English listing has been tested

05

No named person responsible for your title and subtitle

06

06Fair play — what Gummicube genuinely does well

Credit where it is due

07Should you avoid Gummicube?

Honest answer: depends who you are

Avoid if

You have one app and need the listing fixed in the next month, not monitored for a yearYour annual ASO budget is under $40kYou want your own team to learn how to do thisYou are being sold the platform harder than the plan

Hire them if

You manage a large portfolio and want ASO, ASA and creative under one contractYour procurement team needs a vendor with a long track record and a big teamYou value proprietary data enough to pay a software company’s overhead for it

07 — Before you sign

Send me
Gummicube’s
proposal.

I will separate the platform from the plan, tell you what would actually ship in month one, and quote the same listing work as a fixed fee. If they are the right vendor for you, I will say so.

One reply from Gabriel. Same scope, fixed fee, or an honest ‘sign with them’.

08 — Objections

Their data is better than the tools you use.+

Possibly. It is also irrelevant to the decision that matters: which three keywords go in your title. Better data narrows the list. A person picks. You are paying for the picker, and at an agency the picker is behind two other people.

Gummicube has been doing this since 2009. Isn’t that safer?+

It means they know the stores, which is genuinely worth something. It also means fifteen years of process, and process is what gets applied to you when the founders are not on your account.

Can one consultant do Apple Search Ads too?+

I can set it up and hand it over. I will not manage your spend on a retainer, because that is a media buying business, not ASO. If you want both permanently managed by one vendor, an agency is the honest answer.

Is this review biased?+

Yes. I compete for the same clients. That is why the criticism is about the economics of an agency with a software product, not about their people, and why the ‘hire them if’ list is real.
