ASO agency review · September 2026
yellowHEAD review: the AI analyses your screenshots. Avoid paying 130 people to run it.
yellowHEAD is a performance marketing agency founded in 2013, with more than 130 people across Israel, the US and Europe, and a proprietary AI that scores app store creative to predict what will convert. It is a genuinely interesting technology. It is also attached to a large agency’s cost base, and the cost base is what you are actually signing for.
Thinking about hiring yellowHEAD for ASO? Avoid. Let me explain what the AI does and does not do.
Gabriel Machuret · September 2026yellowHEAD is the agency that brings artificial intelligence to the sales call. Its proprietary technology analyses the design elements of app store creative, colours, characters, layouts, and predicts which combinations will convert best. For a visual category like gaming, that is a legitimately useful capability, and the agency has been building it since well before AI was on every deck. I want to be clear about that before I tell you why I would not sign the retainer.
The first thing to understand is what yellowHEAD actually is. It is a performance marketing agency. Paid user acquisition is the core business; SEO, ASO and creative sit around it. More than 130 people, offices in Israel, New York, Cyprus and Poland. When you buy ASO from a company shaped like that, you are buying a slice of a media agency, and a media agency’s economics are built around spend. Organic work is the small, slow, fixed-fee corner of a business whose big numbers come from managing budgets.
The second thing is what the AI does. It scores creative. It tells you that a screenshot with this colour palette and that character placement is likely to convert better than the alternative. Useful. But scoring is the cheap part of creative optimisation. The expensive part is deciding what claim your first screenshot should make, producing the variants, running a clean test, and having the discipline to change one thing at a time. That is human work, it is done by a strategist and a designer on a roster, and no prediction model replaces it. The AI is the demo. The roster is the delivery.
The third thing is scale. An agency of 130 people has a cost base of 130 people. Engineers maintaining the model, media buyers, account managers, a sales team working three continents, offices in four countries. Every retainer, including an organic-only one, carries a share of that. On a typical fee, something like a quarter reaches the people rewriting your metadata and building your screenshot tests. The rest funds the machine that built the AI and the machine that sells it.
Compare that with hiring one consultant. I do not have a prediction model. I have a thousand audited listings and a method: the teardown, the rewrite, one controlled creative hypothesis at a time, the handover. You talk to me, the scope is fixed, and the fee is a fraction of a year at a large performance agency, because nothing on the invoice is engineering, media or offices. When we finish, your team can run the next test without me, and without a licence to anyone’s AI.
In fairness: if you are a large gaming or consumer app with a serious paid budget and a continuous creative pipeline, yellowHEAD’s combination of UA, creative and AI analysis is a coherent offer and the technology is real. If you are here because your organic listing is underperforming, the AI is not the bottleneck. Judgment is. Send me their proposal and I will show you what the ASO work costs without the agency wrapped around it.
02 — Where a performance-agency retainer actually goes
Typical agency economics · illustrative, not their booksTechnology & engineering. Building and maintaining a proprietary AI is a product company’s cost, spread across every client.
Media & UA infrastructure. The paid acquisition machine is the core business. Organic retainers help keep it staffed.
Account management. Your point of contact across four offices and three time zones.
Global offices & margin. Israel, New York, Cyprus, Poland, and the owners’ return.
Hands on your listing. The strategist and designer actually changing your store. About a quarter.

‘AI-optimised creative’ with no controlled test plan behind it
Creative production volume proposed before the first screenshot has a measured conversion rate
No named person responsible for your metadata
A minimum term that matches the media contract rather than the organic work
05 — What the AI demo says vs what your listing gets

The model scores creative. It does not decide what your first screenshot should say, produce the variants, or run a clean test. Those are done by people on a roster, same as everywhere.
Translation: AI scores; people ship130+ experts
A headcount that size is a cost base that size. Most of those experts are media buyers and engineers who will never touch your listing, and every one is on your invoice.

Paid is the business. Organic is the corner. When a media agency does ASO, the incentive is to keep the spend flowing and the organic quietly supportive.
Translation: Organic is the side dish06 — Should you avoid yellowHEAD?

I will separate the ASO from the media and the AI, tell you what the organic work would take on its own, and quote it as a fixed fee. If you genuinely need the performance agency, I will say that.
08 — Objections
“Their AI predicts what converts. Isn’t that a real edge?” +
It narrows the options. A person still chooses the claim, produces the variant and runs the test. Ask how many tests their reference accounts shipped last quarter, and what each one did.
“Isn’t 130 people safer than one?” +
Safer for the agency. One person wrote the strategy on every engagement you have ever paid for; the other 129 did something else. I take a fixed number of clients and ship dated deliverables.
“Can you run paid UA too?” +
No. I do the listing, the keywords, the creative testing and the training. If you need a media agency, they are a legitimate one.
“Is this review biased?” +
Yes. I compete for ASO work. That is why the argument is about agency scale and where AI actually helps, not about competence, and why the ‘hire them if’ list is honest.
