ASO agencies in the United States · September 2026
The American market has the most ASO agencies, the biggest names and the highest prices in the world. It also invented the model every other market copied: a monthly retainer, an account manager, a deck, and a listing that stops changing in month three. Here is what you are actually buying from a Silicon Valley, New York or Boston agency, and why the price says less than you think.
Thinking about an American ASO agency? Let me explain the model you are about to buy.
Gabriel Machuret · September 2026If you are shopping for ASO in the United States, you are shopping in the market that built the industry. Gummicube in San Jose says it was the first ASO company in the world. Moburst in New York works with Google and Uber. The ASO Project, PreApps, App Masters, SplitMetrics: the names most people know are American, the case studies most people cite are American, and the pricing every other market benchmarks against is American. That is the good news. The bad news is that the American market also invented the retainer, and the retainer is the most expensive habit in app marketing.
Here is how it came about. Early ASO agencies grew out of SEO and ad agencies, and both of those bill monthly because both of them do something every month. ASO does not. The stores respond to a decisive change over weeks, then go quiet. A monthly fee bills the quiet at the same rate as the change. American agencies solved the awkwardness by inventing things to do in the quiet months: keyword monitoring, monthly metadata ‘refreshes’, dashboards, quarterly business reviews. All of it is activity. Very little of it is work, and the industry has spent fifteen years training clients not to notice the difference.
The second American habit is the account layer. At the price an American agency charges, there is room for a strategist, a designer, an analyst, and an account manager whose job is to translate between you and the people doing the work. The account manager is excellent. They are also a full salary that never touches your listing, and the person who impressed you on the sales call is, at most agencies, a different person again. You brief the closer, a manager relays it, a specialist executes, an analyst reports. Four salaries, one subtitle.
The third habit is the technology pitch. American agencies compete on proprietary platforms: keyword data, AI creative scoring, testing tools. The demos are genuinely impressive, and a platform is a genuine cost that lands on your invoice. But keyword data is the cheap part of ASO. The expensive part is the judgment about which three terms belong in your title and what claim your first screenshot should make. That lives in one experienced person’s head, and no dashboard replaces it. The platform is the reason the fee is high. It is not the reason the listing improves.
Then there is the logo wall. American agencies have the best client lists in the world, because the biggest apps are American. Those logos prove the agency can pass enterprise procurement and service a Fortune 500 account. They do not tell you who will work on yours, and at a hundred-person agency the answer is almost never the people who won Uber. Your app gets the process that was built for Uber, scaled down, by a team you did not choose.
Against that: one consultant who does only the store, takes a fixed number of clients, and charges a fixed fee that ends. The teardown, the rewrite, one screenshot test at a time, the handover. No account layer, no platform, no quiet months on the invoice. The fee is a fraction of a year at any American agency, not because the work is worse, but because nothing on the invoice is a salary that never touches your listing.
To be fair to the American market: it has more genuine ASO expertise than anywhere else on earth, and if you run a large portfolio that needs ASO, Apple Search Ads and creative from one vendor with a long paper trail, an American agency is a defensible buy. I have reviewed the major ones individually on this site, and some of them do very good work. All of them do it on a retainer. Send me the proposal and I will show you which months contain the work.
Whatever ASO agency in the United States you are talking to, the questions are the same: what ASO services actually contain, what they should cost, and whether you need an agency or a consultant at all. The individual agency reviews cover the named players.

Moburst. Famous logos, a hundred people, and ASO as one line on a very long menu.
The ASO Project. Tidy monthly tiers that cost the same in month five as in month two.
App Masters. A founder on YouTube, a team on your account.
PreApps. A handful of people, agency pricing, ‘#1’ on the homepage.
SEM Nexus and hundreds like it. Built your app, would like to build version two.

Typical local rates · illustrative, not quotesAmerican fees are the world benchmark, and they fund the world’s deepest ASO bench. They also fund the account layer, the platform and the quiet months, which is most of the invoice.

I will mark which months contain work and which contain reports, tell you what the platform is really for, and quote the listing work as a fixed fee. If a big American agency is the right call for your portfolio, I will say so.
Objections
The experience is real and the bench is the deepest anywhere. The fee funds the bench plus the account layer plus the platform plus the quiet months. You are paying for all four and receiving one.
For services that do something every month, yes. The stores respond in weeks, then go quiet. Monthly billing was inherited from SEO and ad agencies, not derived from how ranking works.
Several do good work, and I have reviewed them individually on this site. The criticism is the model, not the people. Every one of them sells it on a retainer.
No, and I will not pretend to. I do the listing, the keywords, the creative testing and the training. If you need paid search and creative production managed permanently, an agency is honest for that.
